Entropy O.A.C. – Dark Clouds and Clarity – Pavement Entertainment

Another metalcore band.

DCaC_Cover

Dark Clouds and Clarity is an effort of Entropy O.A.C. (I believe there is another album but I haven’t found any reference on Discogs or Metal Archives and the band virtually doesn’t exist. LOL.)

Jokes apart, this Ep contains three tracks.

First one is called Failure to Thrive. By sitting through the track you understand the title. The songs has mere 5 minutes but it seems (really) an eternity. Formulaic metalcore without a hint of inventiveness, they content themselves in emulate the other famous bands.

Second track is more decent, called Endless Fire it’s more like “okay let’s think and make an actual tune” and they succeed in that. The song is structurally more accurate with beginning-middle-end scheme.

Last track is, well, not so good. Let me point the problem here: the vocalist. Although the frame is not exactly Wagnerian, the production is decent and that is a head start for any band. But the vocalist insists in crying like a teenager. No good.

Entropy O.A.C. is another minuscule band lost between the big shots in the internet, and if they want to thrive they’ll have to do much better than that!

Laika – Somnia – Filth Regime Records

Somnia for insomnia.

Laika is a melodic death metal band from Canada that didn’t realized that there is a much more famous band with the same name, but you know how kiddos are… always trying to impress.

Their promo photo says their influence: Black Dahlia Murder and Suicide Silence (bands that I loathe) and one of the guys are wearing Judas Priest tee (Sin after Sin) which is a sin per se.

The songs are well executed and AGAIN the production is on spot, but for what? Everything here sounds brainless and made only for the show. There’s no real music inside, just riffs, drumming, but no music. There’s no highlight as all the songs sound the same.

The word somnia in Latin means sleep. It’s explained. If you have insomnia, Laika is better than Clonazepam.

Mandatory – Catharsis – Self Released

Lies, lies and more MODERN METAL LIES!

This band promises in its press release a real fix for HEADBANGERS with hints of NWOBHM and pure metal on the loose and to be the next thing that will rock the world: lemme tell you what they are: LIARS!

This is simply modern metal, metalcore, garbagecore no NWOBHM can be found in ANY of the tracks, everything reeks of modernism, everything is full of “breaks”, everything is Americanized, everything is tailor-made for modern kiddos.

This is not metal in the very sense (and essence) of the word: this is pure and simple Metalcore and Melodic Death Metal with nothing new to bring to the fold.

Worse than being a mediocre band is to be a bunch of LIARS. Don’t listen to them, they don’t deserve to exist!

Catharsis is Self Released.

Rise Of The Northstar – Welcame – Repression Records

No brainer is no brainer.

Rise of the Northstar is a nu-metal band from France with influences of RATM and other bands that I care less.

Rap and metal never was a good mixture and when they add some Japanese things (only these pseudo-nerds can understand these doramas for teenagers) I can say that I can barely digest.

But sure, they have a good production so they will be regarded as the next big “metal” thing in the world by some publications out there so if you’re into fads don’t lose this one.

What the fuck – secretly rolling eyes while trying to express my opinion – it’s a modern metal attempt to be aggressive and they only convince little girls and their grandmas. The refrain is kind of an earworm, but it doesn’t survive more than five spins.

Welcame (Furyo State Of Mind) with all these Biohazard dorama (hahah secretly rolling on the floor while trying to derange the kids subculture) is very heavy with that unbearable beatdown hardcore not so different from the other tracks.

The only interesting track is Samurai Spirit which I believe is their great success, with some ingenuity even though they can’t escape that formulaic, hey-homeboy attitude which irritates me so much. (Look now I’m rapper)

One thing or another can be saved, and when the songs are good they are good. That seems an oxymoron coming fror me and my inherited hatred for this kind of “metal”. But I’m lenient today. Fuck you, I won’t do what you tell me!

The Body Politic – Egressor – Self-Released

Pseudo-metal with Justin Bieber on vocals.

Why the heck some bands insist to call themselves punks or metal or “metalcore”. Metalcore is bad taste and if you don’t already know my opinion I’ll tell you why: it has no connection whatsoever neither with metal nor punk. Plus it has that irritating “modern vocals” but in the case of The Body Politic the boundaries are truly transgressed: the EMO vocals permeate the “album” producing an irritating sound they insist in calling heavy music. It’s only a music for pre-pubescent girls trying to fit in some “rock tribe” with an aggravating factor: they are no one. Never was, never will. This is the worst CD I’ve heard this year. The next one please!

Egressor is our now and it’s Self-Released

EXPAIN – Just The Tip – Self-Release

Technical what?

Expain is a band from Vancouver that they say practice a kind of technical death and thrash metal, you name it. But for me they are just another concealed “-core” band.

Okay, okay, the instrumental is very good! They really dominate the whole thing and the production is on spot, very well done indeed although I don’t see any extraterrestrial technical skills in them to justify the name…

Songs like Don’t Worry, The Worst Is Yet to Come has its moments with great solos and all the brouhaha or the craziness of old Meshuggah-like Allegiance To Pain with a good middle session…

But the real problem here is the goddamned vocals!!! The guy – Daniel Brand – happens to scream over and over again, indefinitely and (as it seems) infinitely! There isn’t any technical skill in his voice and he’s happy to keep things in monotone mode. Imagine Danny Filth but worst! Yes dude it’s that bad…

More so, it’s clear that he draws his influences from the metalcore scene and he pollutes the whole band, they decided to repackage it and sell as if it was the ultimate technical band around: think about GREAT technical acts of the past like (OLD) Cynic, Atheist, Death or Pestilence or more recent bands like the greatest Neuraxis… they resemble none of that! They, at their best, copy and paste bands like Carnifex… bleaaargh.

It’s not the first time it happens but here goes my advice again for those who are ABLE to hear it: slightly change the style of vocals to something more “real”, and the band will follow suit, then you’ll have a technical band because competence it’s a thing that’s in Expain DNA. Come back here and show me a goddamn tech album for fuck sake!

Just The Tip is out now and it is Self-Released

Kayser – Read Your Enemy – (Listenable Records)

Yay or Nay: we have a tie here

Kayser from Sweden claims to be thrash metal and absolutely no, they aren’t. They are a groove metal band inspired by Pantera mixed with hard heavy of Primal Fear and Accept.

But what’s the problem with bad propaganda? It’s that you expect something that is not going to happen like Slayer kicking ass, or Sodom firing at will…

Okay, this is a strange and typical case of ups and downs. The ups are really ups and the downs are really BORING.

First track Bark and Bow is just a fake number of boring music. I mean, it’s groovy and that’s exactly the problem! Not good for an opener.

However in the second track the speed metal comes ripping with ultra violent Bring Out the Clown, what a good music: fast with heaviest riffs ever, beefy sound drumming flak attack.

The next track is I’ll Deny You: a nay: Insipid hard rock with modern approach…. Where can I throw up? Other tracks like Where I Belong brings that horrible hard rock feeling with the terrible voice trying to emulate Danko Jones.

Okay don’t stop reading now: what’s good in this album then?

Dreams Bent Clockwise brings back the sentiment of pure heavy metal, although modern, this song is a heavy number and even the vocals Christian “Spice” Sjöstrand are adjusted in this song. Riffs abound and the drumming is to the point.

It has even a twin song here called Carve the Stone that if it isn’t anything original, it doesn’t dent the integrity of this good song either. There is a highly technical solo that makes me put my hands in the air… rock n roll baby!

Read Your Enemy is like Mpire of Evil. Heavy Metal guaranteed! But this time our friend Sjöstrand fails in delivering a pure-blood heavy metal vocal, appealing to that irritating “metalcore” way of singing…

He Knows Your Secrets  is a serious candidate of the best hard/heavy song of the year. This one aims, fire and kills the pigeon. The drumming of Bob Ruben is PERFECT! What a song.

Penultimate song Roll the Dice is another anthemic number with muscular guitar riffs and headbanging rhythm.

Okay so now the verdict: Read you Enemy by Kaiser is a case where (maybe) several people compose one piece, like in a “democratic” band. It’s clearly that the guy who wrote the brutal Bring Out the Clown was not the same who wrote The Fake Rose. Plus the band suffers what one might say a myriad of influences. While the musicians are top-notch and there’s no doubt about that they try to keep up-to-date to the modern metal: no good. However they are great musicians and (sometimes) great composers after all. So they have my vote.
